Tamworth Castle

Tamworth Castle is the number one heritage attraction located in the town centre of Tamworth. A visit toTamworth Castle any time day or night is packed full of fun, mystery and adventure. Six wealthy and influential families have owned the castle over the centuries. The medieval motte and bailey castle has welcomed a number of royal visitors including King Henry II, James I and his son Prince Charles. The ancient sandstone tower and shell wall still dominate views of the castle today.

Tour Information
Visiting Tamworth Castle, one follows the haunted footsteps of servants, lords and royalty. The journey through time commences in the Medieval Dungeon, a setting for many grisly scenes. Climb the elegant stairs to the 13^th century dining room where guests are invited to sit at the Tudor banqueting table and imagine feasting with the noble family. Step forward to the 17^th century and encounter the grand ladies chamber, a room that has reputedly been haunted for 900 years. Continue through the servant’s chamber to the battlements, here you can take up sentry duty and watch over the stunning views of the courtyard and the Castle grounds. Then enter the Victorian suite of rooms including the private bedchambers, the children’s nursery, and the beautiful drawing room, a tranquil and traditional Victorian family room. Finally descend the stairs and experience Tamworth Castle’s Jewel in the Crown – The Great Hall.  Definitely a room built to impress, and one that  is the setting for weddings, events and school visits. This magnificent Hall features a 15^th century timber tie beam roof, an amazing display of armour and weaponry and a beautiful Jacobean fire place; the Great Hall is the centrepiece of the tour and a fantastic setting for any final pictures before heading into the shop for a hot or cold drink.

Tamworth Castle is host to an exciting programme of events that are guaranteed to bring 1,000 years of history to life. Discover more about the castle ghosts with spooky ghost tours and Paranormal Ghost searches. Join in with our entertaining murder mystery evenings, and help catch the killer or killers. Find out how people feasted and celebrated the medieval way, at our new castle banquets.

A special programme of events for families runs throughout the school Summer holidays.   Family Living History days run several days a week and focus on castle household activities.  These hugely entertaining events encourage visitors to join in with the living history activities of the day

Tamworth Castle’s centre piece room The Great Hall is also available for private hire in the evenings and on selected days throughout the year.  Situated of the ground floor, this magnificent hall can accommodate a maximum of 64 people seated (auditorium style). Due to the historic and sensitive nature of the building, the types of functions that can be accommodated are subject to certain restrictions. Therefore each enquiry is treated on an individual basis and discussed in detail prior to any booking. Regrettably we cannot accommodate birthday parties or wedding receptions.
