Description

The Library stands in the former Aldergate cemetery, which became a garden of rest in 1952 accessible from Corporation Street.

The Library was built at a cost of £178,000 and replaced the much smaller library, now known as the Carnegie Centre, and designed to blend in with its surroundings.

The Library was opened on 8 June 1973 by the Rt Hon Margaret Thatcher, MP and Secretary of State for Education and Science.  The building was designed by John Tetlow and Partners.  Inside the library are some magnificent architectural ceramics by Fritz Steller who also provided the ‘Lady on the anvil’ statue in the Kerria Centre at Amington.
