A jolly good Victorian Christmas at Tamworth Castle
Tamworth Castle staff have waved goodbye to Father Christmas after another successful year of Victorian Santa Trails.
Visitors booked on this year’s festive event have taken a journey to a magical Christmas past, where Father Christmas visited the castle while the busy Victorian household prepared their festive celebrations.
The Santa Trails were held during weekends in December 2019 and tickets sold out fast, with over 2,000 visitors expected through the doors. Both children and adults enjoyed a tour of the castle led by Martha, the Victorian maid, who took the groups to meet the household and were invited to help prepare for Father Christmas’ visit.
There were plenty of activities to get involved with, including cutting out gingerbread men, making traditional Christmas cards, writing a letter to Santa and joining in with some Victorian parlour games before meeting the main man himself.
People took to social media to share their experience with feedback including:
Claire Rollinson said: “We have been to the Santa trail today and it was lovely. So welcoming and not commercialised like some other places we have been. No trying to sell photos and it was all about the children.”
Rachel Freeman said: “We did the Santa trail today and it was brilliant well done everyone involved.” And Nikki Adamson added: “A must for Christmas is the Santa Trail! Fantastic and WOW what a Santa he was.”
Louise Joanne-Lindsey recommended the event and commented: “Fantastic Santa Trail, the whole family loved it. Best Father Christmas we have seen such good value for money.”
Cllr John Chesworth, Cabinet member for Culture and Operational Services, said: “This traditional Christmas event is a big hit every year. Families enjoy a tour of the castle and meet the Victorian characters, bringing festive cheer to all.
“With so many of our Christmas traditions to thank the Victorians for, this really was the best way to get involved in the festivities in a truly historic setting. Christmas spirit has been at its best at Tamworth Castle this December.
“Look out for more castle events in the New Year, something for all the family to enjoy, especially during the school holidays. Don’t miss the return of the Dragon Hunt this February half-term.”
