Packed summer programme for Tamworth Voices
A Tamworth community choir is going from strength to strength, with a packed summer of shows; including a performance at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
Tamworth Voices choir will be entertaining audiences throughout July, and an additional date at the end of September; with their contemporary musical style including gospel, show-tunes and chart hits which have proven very popular with audiences of all ages.
The choir was set up by Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts & Events team following a successful taster session in 2011 and performed locally at venues such as the Assembly Rooms and Tamworth Castle Grounds. Demand for this group soon took off and the choir now has more than 70 members, ranging in age from 18 to 75 and over, and performs to large audiences in top venues across the whole of the Midlands area.

Jo Sands, a member of Tamworth Voices choir said: “Tamworth Voices has grown from strength to strength since 2012 when we performed at the Olympic Torch Ceremony.
“During the last six years we have performed in France, at the Symphony Hall and at our home venue Tamworth Assembly Rooms. More recently, due to the exciting re-development of the Assembly Rooms, we have been ‘on tour’ at community events and will be returning to the Symphony Hall in July.
“The choir is full of a wonderful range of friendly people who love to come together every Tuesday to sing all types of songs – from classic pop and rock songs to songs from the musicals and choral pieces. Every week our Musical Director Gladstone Wilson (AKA ‘G’) continues to push our choral skills with the development of a wide range of harmonies.
“We are one big singing family and new members are always welcome – you don’t need to be an expert, you just need an enthusiasm and passion for song.”
Cllr John Chesworth, Tamworth Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Culture and Operational Services, said: “Tamworth Voices started with an informal singing taster session organised by our Arts & Events team. We didn’t quite expect how successful this would be; dozens of people turned up and Tamworth Voices was born. Since then, the choir has provided people with opportunities to perform across Tamworth and further afield. It’s great to see it continues to go from strength to strength.
“Tamworth Voices have been working hard to prepare for these shows and it is wonderful that they have the opportunity to perform alongside other leading choirs from across the Midlands and in such great venues as Symphony Hall and Nottingham Albert Hall; not forgetting returning to our own Tamworth Bandstand.”
Tamworth Voices is always on the lookout for new members. Anyone interested in joining can email tarartsdevelopment@tamworth.gov.uk, or call 01827 709618, for more information.
